Transmissible gastroenteritis (T.G.E) is a gastro-intestinal contagious disease of pigs caused by virus from the Coronaviridae family. The virus is stable in cold temperatures and has acid resistance so it can go through stomach to infect in small intestine.
T.G.E usually infected for piglet under 3 weeks of age, almost occur when pigs are 7 days of age. The disease spreads rapidly. The first clinical signs to differentiate include vomiting, yellow-gray diarrhea. The piglets dehydrate quickly, sunken eyes and marked thrist. Because the virus attacks the small intestine and damaged intestinal villi so the piglets cannot digest and absorb any food. The mortality is very high within 3-5 days after infected due to severe dehydration, hunger and cold.
Treatment
Like other viral disease, T.G.E has not special drug to treat, but should be used to antibiotic to reduce secondary infections.
- Using BIO-NEW DIARRHEA STOP for piglets to drink to stop diarrhea.
- Injecting into the abdominal cavity gulucose 5% in the morning and Lactate Ringer in the afternoon, 10-15ml each time depend on pig’s weight.
Preventation
- The vaccines are not yet available. Therefore, the most important is cleaning of stables.
- Can created antibodies against T.G.E by taking a piece of the small intestine of piglets which infected T.G.E for feed sows, from which antibodies in the sows will transmit to the piglets to against T.G.E disease by colostrum.
