SIDE EFFECTS OF TRANQUILIZER INFECTED PORK

Recently a slaughter house in Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh city have been accused for injecting tranquilizer to pigs before slaughtering in order to make the pork more tough, more wet and remain fresh for a couple of hours after which would rise their price. Realizing this fact make the consumers worried. What would this affect our valued consumers?

Associated professor LE VAN THO – Technology advisor of BIO-PHARMACHEMIE joint-venture company

It cannot be denied that PROZIL, the drug which are used by the slaughter house is the commercial name of an animal medicine product contain Acepromazine and Atropine. Acepromazine can suppress the central nervous system leading to tranquilization, anti-stress, antiemetic, normally used with other anesthetic drugs during surgery.

Atropine is muscarinic antagonists of the central nervous system, minimize secretion, hypoperistalsis and smooth muscles relaxation. This drug is used as a pre-medication prior to surgery to control the hypersecretion of saliva and respiratory secretion, which are side effects of anesthetic drug.

Why injection PROZIL can make the pork fresher and tougher after slaughtering?

Talking about pig, especially high lean meat breed (high lean breed) which is easily to get stress during transportation or before slaughtered. This would increase exudate in the meat during slaughtering, the meat become pale, soft, dry, not attractive, which called P.S.E meat (Pale, Soft, Exudative meat). If pigs were injected prior with acepromazine, stress would be minimized during transporting or slaughtering which means lessen in exudation, pale color and softness of the pork. As a result, the pork would be red, tough and sticky, fresh looks, which will attract more customers and increase the price.

Although Acepromazine and Atropine are widely used in veterinary medicine and not banned, they should not be used freely but follow the indications in order to minimize the residues in the meat before reaching the market.

The withdrawal period for both Acepromazine and Atropine is 5 – 7 days. This is the limit of time in order for the drug to be eliminated that caused no harm to the health of the consumers.

What will residues of tranquilizers affect the health of the consumer?

In case the consumers accidentally buy the tranquilizer infected pork, these are the product contain a high percentage of residues because the drug is not fully eliminated, if it is consumed continuously there would occur some side effects including blood vessels distention leading to hypotension, low respiratory rate. These symptoms are quite serious, especially for children and elderly people.

How to regconise the tranquilizer infected pork?

Honestly, for consumer to detect tranquilizer or some drugs infected pork by naked eyes is quite impossible. Nevertheless, with those appear to have attractive red fresh color, sticky, tough, high lean meat percentage could be a signs for consumers to suspect that these are the infected ones.

On the other hand, consumer should change their requirements with some other animal products. For example, we want chicken have yellow skins and legs, which make the suppliers to paint their product with the appropriated color. As a result, we have bought an unsafety product for our consumption.
In order to stop these side effects, the government should organize training courses for the farmer, veterinarian, slaughter house owner to guide them about the bad sides of drug residues in animal products and encourage people to use drug correctly. On the other hand, they should also take samples for examination to detect the drug residues in the products in order to stop unqualified products to reach the market.
